Thyroid is a common endocrine disorder that affects many people worldwide. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and development. Nowadays, people of all ages are suffering from thyroid disease. The symptoms of thyroid disease include fatigue, weight gain or loss, hair loss, dry skin, and mood changes.
According to Dr Rajendra Prasad Reddy, a thyroid specialist from Warangal, Telangana thyroid issues are more likely to occur in women than in men. This is due to the hormone estrogen produced in women and a higher incidence of autoimmune diseases, making women 10 per cent more likely to develop thyroid problems compared to men.
There are different types of thyroid conditions, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, constipation, feeling cold all the time, hair loss, difficulty concentrating, poor memory, breathing problems, pregnancy issues in women, and irregular periods.
People who experience these symptoms should see a doctor immediately for a thyroid test and take the appropriate medication. It is recommended to have a medical check-up every three months. Problems can also arise due to the overproduction of thyroid hormones. Conditions such as Graves’ disease, autoimmune disorders, and thyroid cancer fall under this category. Hyperthyroidism can also result from drug use and other factors, leading to symptoms like hand tremors, heat intolerance, palpitations, and loose motions. Various tablets are available to treat these conditions.
In addition to these issues, lifestyle changes can also lead to thyroid problems. Excessive smoking, overuse of certain medications, and psychological stress can trigger thyroid disease. Injury to the throat can also cause chemical imbalances, leading to thyroid issues. People with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism should consult doctors, undergo tests, and take medications to manage the condition.
Consuming cool drinks does not cause thyroid problems, but if the drinks contain high levels of lithium, there is a risk. Therefore, it is important to check if the drinks contain lithium. Additionally, using salt with low iodine content can lead to thyroid problems, so it is advisable to use iodized salt. By taking these precautions, it is possible to avoid thyroid-related issues.
