KOCHI: The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi, in collaboration with the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania, Australia, is organising an international workshop on ‘Preparing for Climate Change on Marine Systems in Australia and India’ from Tuesday to March 10. Michael Carter, Consul Commercial and Trade Commissioner of Australia in Chennai, will inaugurate the workshop at the Conference Auditorium, CMFRI, on Tuesday.A team of seven scientists from Australia led by Stewart Frusher, associate professor, IMAS University of Tasmania, will participate in the event. The Indian team of 14 scientists will be led by G Syda Rao, Director, CMFRI.Frusher will be the guest of honour.Funded by the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund, the workshop aims to bring together an inter-disciplinary research team from India and Australia to improve understanding of the impact of climate change on marine resources and stakeholders of the two countries. With the rate of climate warming predicted to be greater than 90 per cent of the global average, both the regions have been identified as global warming hotspots. These areas are already being affected by climate change and are expected to provide case studies for developing adaptation responses across substantially different cultures. The strategic and operational plan developed during the workshop will be a collaborative research effort, the outputs of which can assist governments, industries and communities to prepare and adapt to changes in their marine resources.
