Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday picked up a marker and began explaining the development of India’s semiconductor ecosystem on the whiteboard in his office during a media interaction following the Centre’s nod to three more semiconductor units to be set up.

According to a PTI report, the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved proposals to set up three semiconductor plants, including a mega fab by Tata Group, at an investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore.

The three units approved under the scheme will make chips for various sectors, including defence, automobiles and telecommunications, and will begin construction within the next 100 days, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a media briefing after the cabinet meeting.

“This is a decisive moment for India and underlines the Atmanirbhar Bharat promise. will emerge as a major semiconductor manufacturing hub in the world,” Vaishnaw said, adding that the three proposals are a “giant leap” for the country.

“It is a remarkable achievement. It is a giant leap. Now, we are targeting to become a major player in the semiconductor value chain by 2029… PM Modi actually wants us to work on a 20-year vision for semiconductors,” Vaishnaw added.

The Central government has also approved a proposal by the Tata group to build a greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam. The facility will be built with an investment outlay of Rs 27,000 crore and is expected to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. It will be India’s first semiconductor unit in the Northeast.
