A police sub-inspector was arrested in Rajasthan’s Dausa for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl on Friday, police said. The incident took place in the Lalsot area when the accused lured the girl to his room in the afternoon and raped her.

ASP Ramchandra Singh Nehra, said that the accused — Bhupendra Singh — was taken into custody and is being interrogated.

Meanwhile, local residents of the area surrounded the Rahuwas police station and started shouting slogans against the police. According to an India Today report, the crowd also beat up the accused before handing him over to the police.

BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena also visited the spot and said that there is a lot of anger among the people over the incident of rape of a seven-year-old Dalit girl by a policeman in Lalsot. I have come here to get justice for the innocent child, the BJP MP added.

The police, which has become autocratic due to the incompetence of the Ashok Gehlot government, is not desisting from committing atrocities even on a sensitive occasion like elections, Meena said.

Reportedly, the BJP MP also said that the accused is facing ‘severe action’ and will soon be dismissed from his job. “The police, along with the family, will provide assistance to all the affected members of the family in every possible way,” he said, adding that survivor’s family would be given compensation for the same.

Rajasthan’s BJP President CP Joshi also condemned the incident and said that the accused must be given strict punishment. Taking a dig at the state government, Joshi asked, “…Why are such incidents occurring since five years and continuously increasing?” adding that criminals become successful in committing such crimes when the government and the administration ‘ignore these kinds of incidents’.

Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Priyank Kanoongo has said that taking the incident into consideration, a notice will be released to the Rajasthan government. “…This shows how insensitive the system has become… We are taking action as per the preliminary information we received. It is important to ensure the security of the family as well.”

Kanoongo further stated that the Commission will ensure that proper security for the family and counselling for the girl.
