Itchy Anus is a common symptom of various STIs, including herpes, gonorrhoea, warts and corns.

This is often felt after being intimate with someone. It can be a symptom of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It is a common symptom of various STIs, including herpes, gonorrhoea, warts and corns. Many other causes of anal itching are not related to sexually transmitted infections. Dr Pooja C Thukral, a gynaecologist and obstetrician, said that STIs or STDs can cause anal itching. Let’s take a look at some sexually transmitted diseases that can cause itchy anus.

  1. Anal Herpes

    According to a study published in the Journal of Colon Disease and Rectum, it is spread through sexual contact with an infected person. Anal herpes infection causes skin irritation, small blisters in the genital and anal areas, painful urination, vaginal discharge and penile discharge.

    1. Gonorrhea

      Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, it can be spread through any sexual contact, including anal sex. The common symptoms include rectal bleeding, painful bowel movements, pain while urinating, throat pain, itching in the genital area and anus.

        Anal warts are warts on the anus that can grow inside or outside the anus. Also known as condyloma acuminata, they may not cause pain or discomfort at first but then grow and become itchy. They can also spread from your anus to your genitals and surrounding tissues.

              Skin irritation is a common cause of anal itching. The skin around the anus is thin and sensitive. So when irritated, it creates itching and discomfort, the expert said. There are various causes of dermatitis. The most common reasons are perfumed soaps, lotions, eczema and psoriasis.

                An anal fissure is a tear, split, or opening in the anus. That is, it causes the skin to overstretch, resulting in damage. The common symptoms of anal fissure include bloody stools, anus itching and anus injuries.

                According to the report explained by the expert, the risk factors for getting an STI that causes itching in the anus are:

                • Sex without a condom: Condoms help protect against the spread of STIs that cause anal itching, such as herpes, gonorrhoea and chlamydia.

                  Multiple sex partners: This occurs when having sex with multiple sex partners and anyone from them has an STI.

                  Sex under the influence of alcohol or drugs: It is also more likely to occur when having unprotected sex under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

                  Here are some effective ways to prevent anal itching:

                  1. Safe sex: This is the most important step. Always use condoms consistently and correctly during genital, anal and oral sex.

                    Maintain hygiene: Wash your genital and anal areas daily with mild soap and warm water. Avoid harsh soaps that irritate the skin.

                    Wear cotton underwear: Wearing cotton underwear allows for better ventilation and reduces moisture.

                    Use lotion: Try using a soothing lotion to prevent itching.

                    Some simple home remedies to treat anal itching are:

                    1. Coconut Oil: Coconut oil soothes the skin and cures infections that cause anal irritation. Rub warm coconut oil on the affected area twice a day to reduce itching and irritation.

                      Aloe vera: Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties that help in wound healing. When applied to the anus, it reduces irritation, itching and inflammation.

                      Ice packs: Applying ice packs helps in relieving discomfort and inflammation.
