One of the world's leading wine trade shows has announced plans to host its first event in the US next year, to cater to the largest wine-consuming nation in the world.

Vinexpo, which alternates between Bordeaux and Hong Kong every year, will be held in New York for two days in March of 2018, and is set to attract major wine players from around the world eager to get in on a market that shows no signs of slowing.

The US has maintained its lock as the largest wine market in the world since 2010. The year 2016 marked the 24th consecutive year of growth for US wine sales reaching $59 billion USD in sales, to represent a 4 percent increase over 2015, says Vinexpo.

It's estimated that about a third (36 percent) of US adults drink wine, and nearly 40 percent say they drink wine weekly.

"The time is right to bring Vinexpo to the U.S. market, which leads the world in wine consumption and whose influence only continues to grow," said Guillaume Deglise, CEO of Vinexpo in a statement.

The US edition will be held in the Javits Center' 45,000-square-foot River Pavilion and feature tastings, conferences, master classes and networking events.

Though the US may lead the world's wine market now, China is closing the gap, with recent figures showing that the Asian giant is poised to leapfrog from fourth position now, to second place after the US by 2020.

The 2017 edition of Vinexpo, meanwhile, is set to return to Bordeaux this year and attract 48,000 trade visitors and 2,300 exhibitors from 151 countries.

Vinexpo also hosts a bi-annual event in Tokyo.

Vinexpo New York is set for March 5 -6, 2018.
