Bollywood actress Upasana Singh has appeared in several Hindi and Punjabi hits. Her acting prowess and hilarious antics have stolen the hearts of many. One of her most memorable characters that got etched into the hearts of millions was from the 1997 film Judaai. Starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Urmila Matondkar in the leading roles, the film garnered praise from many.
In the film, Upasana Singh portrayed the role of a deaf-mute. She played a double role in the film. On one hand, she played Paresh Rawal’s wife. While at the same time, she was his daughter and Johnny Lever’s love interest. It was her dialogue, ‘abba dabba jabba’, that brought her stardom.
Talking about it in an exclusive interview with ETimes, Upasana Singh discussed the scene and shared how it influenced her career. She revealed while signing the film, she asked if she would get the chance to share the screen with Sridevi as she was a big fan of the actress. To which the director replied yes and that is when I said yes to the film, Upasana Singh revealed to the Times of India.
During the conversation, the iconic dialogue Abba Dabba Jabba was also being discussed. “When the director first told me about the lines, I was not convinced a mute person could speak only these words. But as he insisted, I agreed,” she said.
She further revealed, “I told myself to try playing characters with different expressions and voices. I have always been experimenting with roles.” The actress and comedian further confessed that she found the plot of Judaai weird where the wife sells her husband but prefers not to say anything.
“I was doubtful of how people would see this film. But Judaai became such a big hit that people started knowing me as Abba Dabba Jabba rather than my real name. So far, I have done so many live shows where people demanded me to recreate that dialogue.”
Upasana Singh is now all set to feature in a slew of upcoming films including Lakda Na Laadu, Lakkad Ke Laddu, Gumnam Hai Koi, and Rashna: The Ray of Light to name a few.
