There may have been several films that talk about the dilemmas and troubles of homosexuals in conventional and old-fashioned Indian society. But there hasn’t been even a single Bollywood project that has been true and convincing in representing such stories.
Directed by Hansal Mehta, 'Aligarh' has been applauded by all those who've watched it at film festivals. The film - featuring Manoj Bajpyee and Rajkummar Rao in key roles - is based on the real life story of Marathi professor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras. While Manoj plays the helpless gay professor, National Award winning actor Rajkummar essay the role of the journalist who explores Manoj’s life and play an instrumental role in taking his fight forward.
Will ‘Aligarh’, which has won plaudits at the 20th Busan International Film Festival, London Film Festival and 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, be an eye opener? Will the film as it discusses Section 377, which includes Homosexual acts and criminalises Sexual Activies Against the order of Nature, play a key role in sensitizing people? Will the makers, who have powerful films such as ‘Citylights’, ‘Shahid’ and ‘NH10’, be as impressive with the story of ‘Aligarh’ too?
