Following its major success with its Netflix live adaptation of the animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender is now all set for a new animated film, slated to release in 2025. Exploring Aang and his companions’ adventures during their adult years, the animated film will present a fresh narrative for fans. During Paramount’s slate presentation at CinemaCon, the makers confirmed the news, further revealing that actors Dave Bautista and Eric Nam will be headlining the voice cast for the film in development.
While Eric Nam will lend his voice to the lead character of Aang, Bautista will voice the villain character. Paramount also announced that the new ‘Avatar’ animated film will be released on October 10, 2025.
It was in June 2022 that studios announced that three standalone Avatar animated films were in development, of which the 2025 film was the first to get a release date. Director Lauren Montgomery, who was behind the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, will be directing the project with original series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko executive producing alongside Eric Coleman. William Mata is co-directing.
Talking Dave Bautista, the actor who recently marked his exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is known for his appearances in Dune 2, Knives Out: The Glass Onion, and Studio Ghibli’s The Boy And The Heron. As he gears up to portray yet another notable role, details about his character in the new Avatar film have been kept under wraps. However, his involvement does promise to bring a new set of challenges for Aang and his friends.
More about the new Avatar animated movie
The film is said to be set between the events of the conclusion of the original animated series that ran from 2005 to 2008 and The Legend of Korra from 2012 to 2014. The show mainly focuses on the adventures of the mystical Avatar, who can master all four elements of nature, including air, water, earth, and fire.
However, Bautista will be among the new cast members to join the celebrated franchise and it is expected that he will portray a new villain, threatening the world.
Voice cast for Smurfs and Spongebob Squarepants
During the same event, Paramount also revealed the voice cast for a few other upcoming animated movies, including Rihanna’s Smurfs movie and The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants.
Rihanna will be seen voicing the Smurfette and also creating the original music for the film, which will be released on February 15, 2025. On the other hand, the original Spongebob Squarepants voice cast will return for the new film, slated to release on December 19, 2025.
