Marvel Studios faced major setbacks following the release of Avengers Endgame. But seems like the studio has put their past behind by bringing together two of its most iconic characters, Deadpool & Wolverine. The long awaited movie featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman not only thrilled fans but also created havoc at the box office. Since its announcement, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film was expected to boost studios’ box office numbers and it successfully entered the list of highest grossing R-rated movies in its opening weekend. The superhero thriller collected over $438 million (approximately Rs 366 Crore) worldwide. Within just three days of its release, it has become the sixth highest grossing film of the year.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film featuring Wade Wilson and Logan, along with surprise characters from the past, earned $205 million (approximately Rs 171 crore) in the domestic markets and $233 million (approximately Rs 195 crore) internationally, while the total worldwide collection stood at $438 million. Despite the impressive opening, it currently ranks behind Inside Out 2, Dune: Part Two, Despicable Me 4, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4 in the global collection for 2024.
Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine left behind several films, including Black Panther, The Lion King, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in its opening weekend. However, it still needs to cross the records set by major blockbusters, such as Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World and The Avengers to lead the list.
Reportedly, outside the domestic market, the maximum earnings came from China, which brought in $24 million, followed by the UK with $22 million and Mexico with $18 million. Australia earned $13 million, while Germany, Brazil and India each contributed $10 million. On the other hand, Variety reports suggest that many MCU fans chose to watch the film in IMAX, where it earned $36.5 million.
Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, alongside, Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapicic, Aaron Stanford, Brianna Hildebrand, Rob Delaney, Lewis Tan, Jason Flemyng, Kelly Hu and Ray Park. The movie also features special cameos of Tyler Mane, Dafne Keen, Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, Wesley Snipes, Chris Evans and Henry Cavill.
