The latest trailer for Disney’s Moana 2 is officially the studio’s most-watched animated movie trailer ever, with an incredible 178 million views in only 24 hours. The May 29 trailer smashes previous records, with Inside Out 2 garnering 157 million views and Frozen 2 coming in at 116 million. The figure surpasses the 113 million views of Pixar’s Incredibles 2. Actors Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson play Moana and Maui, respectively, in the sequel to Moana.
Views come only from the internet on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, X, YouTube and TikTok. An overwhelming number of viewers praised Moana as their all-time favourite Disney character, making her, Maui and Pua stand out among the other characters.
Cravalho and Johnson will play Moana and Maui, respectively, in the movie, which opens in theatres on November 27.
The two-minute trailer for the sequel shows the titular character setting off on a voyage across the ocean in obedience to a spiritual calling. Once more, she runs across The Rock’s gigantic demigod while travelling the seas.
“This is a call from the ancestors to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean,” Cravalho’s Moana says.
Disney is relieved with Moana 2’s record-breaking trailer, as its animated movies have not done well at the box office lately, especially during Thanksgiving releases.
Frozen II, Disney’s Thanksgiving release in 2019, did incredibly well at the global box office, earning over a billion dollars.
The COVID-19 pandemic closed theatres on Thanksgiving 2020, and the Thanksgiving releases in 2021–2023 all did poorly.
As indicative of the widespread affection for Moana’s storyline and characters, Nielsen, a marketing research organisation, reports that the 2016 original movie was the most streamed movie of 2023 across all platforms.
The animated film, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, follows Moana as she answers a summons from her ancestors and sets off on an unexpected journey in long-lost waters. Johnson plays the god Maui once more.
Before being revised as a theatrical sequel, the concept was first created as a television series.
Moana 2, which features new songs by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, is produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino.
