Aanand L Rai's Manmarziyan has reportedly found its third star in Dulquer Salmaan. Actors Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal were already attached to the project with Rai looking for a second male lead to pair opposite Taapsee. South star Dulquer, who has delivered quite a few blockbusters in Malayalam and Tamil, is that lead.
The news that Aanand L Rai had tapped Bollywood's grittiest director, Anurag Kashyap, to direct Manmarziyan, a film set around a love triangle, came as a surprise to many. While Rai had announced plans for the film in 2015, it had since become mired in production hell. Rai, who wrote and will be producing the film, had earlier planned to get Sameer Sharma to direct the film before switching over to Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. Since then, he has gunned for Kashyap to helm the movie, with shooting expected to commence in January, most likely in Himachal Pradesh. "Just because he's made a 'Gangs of Wasseypur' doesn't mean Anurag doesn't understand love. I gave him a narration, he loved the script, but was busy with 'Mukkabaaz'. I told him we would do both together. He could make my film after finishing his. This way I'd get satisfaction and he, lots of affection," Rai had said in an earlier interview.
Dulquer is set to make his Bollywood debut in Akash Khurana's upcoming Karwaan, which stars Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar. DQ, as he is popularly known, is a superstar in Malayalam and Tamil where plays lover boy and angry young man with equal ease. In Malayalam, he was acclaimed for his roles in Kammatipaadam - which Anurag Kashyap himself once tweeted about as a must-watch - Charlie and Ustaad Hotel.
In Tamil, he had his first big break break with Mani Ratnam's Ok Kanmani (remade as OK Jaanu in Hindi) and then went on play four different roles in Bejoy Nambiar's Solo before signing up for Desingh Periyasami's Kannum Kannum Kollai Adithaal.
