Namrata Shirodkar is today widely known as Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu’s wife, but she had been a renowned actress in her own right once. Apart from being an actress, Namrata has also been a pageant titleholder. Namrata, crowned Miss India in 1993, achieved numerous accolades in the modelling industry. She also competed in the Miss Universe pageant, securing 6th place. The same year, she also represented India in the Miss Asia Pacific contest and was chosen as first runner-up. Namrata began her Bollywood journey in 1977 as a child actor in the Shatrughan Sinha film Shirdi Ke Sai Baba. Although she was initially set to make her lead debut alongside Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty in Purab Ki Laila Aur Bassim Ki Chaila, the film was never released. She eventually made her official debut in 1998 with the movie Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai. She followed it up with films with average business like Mere Do Anmol Ratan and Hero Hindustani.
Her big breakthrough came with the crime drama Vaastav opposite Sanjay Dutt, which was both critically acclaimed and a box office success. The song Meri Duniya Hai Tujhme Kahin, picturised on her, became very popular. She was unable to replicate that success in her future projects. Her subsequent films did not perform well, failing to achieve the anticipated success. In the six years of her film career, 16 films in which she acted turned out to be flops.
Namrata tried her luck in Telugu and Marathi films as well, but could not achieve success in either industry. In 2000, she met Mahesh Babu and they fell in love. After dating for 5 years, they got married in 2005.
After her marriage, she gave up acting altogether. She now resides in Hyderabad with her husband, Mahesh Babu. The couple has two children, a son and a daughter.
