Deepika Padukone is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after actresses in the film industry. Since her debut in 2007 with Om Shanti Om, she has consistently entertained audiences with her acting skills. However, it’s a rarity for a newcomer in Bollywood to be given the lead role in a major project. In a candid conversation with casting director Mukesh Chhabra on Mashable India’s show The Bombay Dream, choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan shared insights into her decision to cast Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om.
During the conversation, when asked about the decision to launch Deepika Padukone, Farah Khan explained, “To launch a hero is on another level because who will give you the money? I launched her because Shah Rukh Khan was there. So, I could take that risk.” Farah emphasised that Deepika possessed all the qualities necessary for success in the industry. She highlighted Deepika’s stunning appearance, acting prowess, and ability to captivate audiences on the dance floor as key factors in her success. In Om Shanti Om, Deepika played a double role as Shantipriya and Sandy, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film also featured Shreyas Talpade, Arjun Rampal, and Kirron Kher.
As a suggestion for many young aspiring artists, the choreographer-filmmaker said, “It’s important to be self-aware. When you go out, you need to see who your competition is. Then you will be able to understand that there are better people here or ‘I can do better than them’.”
Farah also offered insights into the mindset required of aspiring actors. She mentioned that budding actors must have strong mental fortitude as they may face rejection on a daily basis. According to the choreographer, they must possess extremely thick skin and a high level of self-confidence to navigate the challenges of the industry.
Meanwhile, Deepika is currently basking in the success of Siddharth Anand’s aerial action thriller, Fighter. The film, which also stars Hrithik Roshan, Anil Kapoor, Karan Singh Grover, and Akshay Oberoi, hit theatres on January 25. In addition to Fighter, she is set to star in a sci-fi action thriller titled Kalki 2898 AD alongside Prabhas. Furthermore, Deepika is lined up to appear in Singham Again, directed by Rohit Shetty. This action-packed film features an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tiger Shroff and others.
