I Was A Star When Qubool Hai Ended, Says Surbhi Jyoti
Subhi Jyoti is super excited as the show is back with its reboot, titled Qubool Hai 2.0, also starring Karan Singh Grover, who was the original male lead of Qubool Hai.

Surbhi Jyoti is one of the most sought-after faces in the television industry and the actress credits her massively popular show Qubool Hai for this. Before the 2012 romance TV drama, Surbhi appeared in a couple of Punjabi films and shows like Ik Kudi Punjab Di, Raula Pai Gaya, Munde Patiala De, and Kach Diyan Wanga. But her turn as fun-loving, modern, outspoken Muslim woman, Zoya Farooqui, brought her critical acclaim and made her an overnight sensation.

Subhi is super excited as the show is back with its reboot, titled Qubool Hai 2.0, also starring Karan Singh Grover, who was the original male lead of Qubool Hai. In this interview with us, Surbhi opened up about the show, her reunion with Karan and how OTT platforms have democratised the star system.

“Qubool Hai was definitely a turning point in my career. It was my first show and it was an overnight hit. It went on for over three years and I was a star when it ended. The show literally changed my life. It was a very urban and progressive show and whatever it has left, Naagin fulfilled that because Naagin was a massy show. I have only done two shows and one web show Tanhaiyan, but luckily whatever I have done became popular– be it Qubool Hai or Naagin,” said Surbhi.

“I have made my fanbase in the urban class through Qubool Hai because it was a very modern story and the masses have really loved me as Naagin. So, I was blessed that I did two very different shows. It was very challenging to play Naagin as well but I’m so glad that I did it because it was a benchmark in my career.”

The actress, who was last seen in Ekta Kapoor’s Naagin 3, said reprising her role as Zoya Farooqui, was “extremely nostalgic” for her. “I have a different connection here because I have already played this character. And since it was my first show, so it’s always going to be closest to my heart. When I got to know that they were coming up with the OTT version of the show, I was very excited. Also, the story is so amazing and interesting that coming on board was a no-brainer.”

Talking about collaborating with Karan again after eight years, Surbhi said, “It was like we have been continuously shooting and we have taken a small break and here we are shooting again in Europe. Karan was my first co-star ever. I had a beautiful warmth with him then and it’s just the same. There were no ice to break. We have already known each other over a period of 7-8 years. So, I was again irritating him and we were like Tom and Jerry again (laughs).”

Surbhi said that she feels lucky to have got opportunities to work on OTT platforms where casting is done only on the basis of an actor’s talent. She also added that the streaming platforms have blurred the line between film and TV industries.

“There was a huge gap between the two (film and TV actors) but I never really understood why that gap was there because the success rate that we have in television is much higher than in movies. If there are 10 movies, the success rate is 10 per cent. On the other hand, if there are 10 TV shows, the success rate is 80 per cent. Nobody goes out from their houses just to see a movie but every house has a television set. The reach that a TV actor has is much more than a film actor. So it’s unfortunate that we would look down upon the small screen.

“But with the arrival of OTT, there is a platform which can actually do justification with actors. If you fit the role and are a good actor then there’s a chance for you to shine on the OTT platform irrespective of whether you are a TV star or a film actor,” said Surbhi.

Qubool Hai 2.0 is currently streaming on ZEE5.
