Disney and Pixar’s latest release Inside Out 2 has shattered the box office records. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the animated adventure premiered in the theatres on June 14. In its first weekend, the film witnessed the biggest Hollywood opening of 2024, amassing 155 million dollars domestically and surpassing the collections of Dune: Part Two (82.5 million dollars) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (80 million dollars), as per a report in Variety. Globally, Inside Out 2 raked up a handsome 295 million dollars, becoming the second-best opening for a Pixar animated movie.
The figures present a significant milestone for Pixar as the animation company has struggled to restore its box office collections after the COVID-19 pandemic, reported Variety. Inside Out 2 is also the first film to debut above 100 million dollars after Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in July which gathered 162 million dollars. The record holder for the highest animated domestic opening is the Pixar movie Incredibles 2 (182.7 million dollars). It was followed by The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination and Universal (146.4 million dollars), Finding Dory from Pixar (135.1 million dollars), and Frozen 2 from Walt Disney Animation (130.3 million dollars).
Outside North America, Inside Out 2 witnessed the largest opening in Mexico minting 30.2 million dollars, reported Variety. Korea came in next with 14.9 million dollars, followed by the UK with 13.9 million dollars, Germany with 8.1 million dollars and the Philippines with 6.7 million dollars. The movie has already accumulated 140 million dollars overseas. It is yet to be released in major markets of Spain, Japan, China, and France, added the outlet.
Produced at a budget of 200 million dollars, Inside Out 2 arrives on the silver screens almost 10 years after the release of director Pete Docter’s 2015 original Inside Out. The second installment offers the audience a sneak peek into the mind of now-teenager Riley. Besides her familiar emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and Anger (Lewis Black), she is also feeling newer emotions like Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), Nostalgia (June Squibb), and Envy (Ayo Edebiri) on her visit to the summer camp.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Inside Out 2’s Rotten Tomatoes score is an impressive 93 per cent.
