Jeremy Allen White starrer comedy-drama The Bear is once again making headlines for two reasons: first, for setting the record with 23 nominations for the most Emmys for a comedy series in a single year, and the second one being the discourse around whether the Christopher Storer show is a comedy or not. During the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards, The Bear co-stars Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach share their thoughts on the debate for their show.
Talking to Variety, Edebiri, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series this time, said, “I mean, I think, I don’t really say anything. I think those are conversations for other people to have, and our conversation is in the work. I think people laugh!” Moss-Bachrach, who took home the 2024 Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, chipped in and said, “I think the show is really funny. I don’t know, comedy-drama, who cares?”
Edebiri continued, “I think it’s an important conversation to have, but I think the show is funny, and I think the work is good, and we’re celebrating a lot of really amazing shows, so I’m not really interested in discourse that is insulting to anyone.”

Well, it seems like X (formerly Twitter) users are buying into the statements of The Bear stars. One user said, “The bear committing category fraud in 2024 is insulting, and their actors don’t seem to care.” Another wrote, “I love #TheBear, but I’m boycotting until they move it from the comedy category. I think they’d win in Drama, but they are screwing some brilliant comedic actors out of a chance for an award.”
The first season of The Bear won ten awards at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. In the latest edition of the award show, it won 11 awards out of 23 nominations. During the 76th Emmy Awards, which was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15, the hosts and Schitt’s Creek actors Eugene Levy and Dan Levy poked fun at The Bears. “Now, I love the show, I love the show, and I know some of you will be expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is really a comedy — but in the true spirit of ‘The Bear,’ we will not be making any jokes,” said Eugene.
In all the comedy categories, The Bear competed against laugh-out-loud shows like Hacks, Only Murders In The Building and Abbott Elementary.
