Days after objecting to the Rajya Sabha Chairperson referring to her by her husband’s name, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan humorously introduced herself as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ on the House floor. This playful remark led to a priceless reaction from Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, who burst out laughing.

The session saw several Opposition MPs, including Congress’s Jairam Ramesh and AAP’s Raghav Chadha, also laughing along with Dhankhar. What followed was a light-hearted exchange between Jaya Bachchan and Jagdeep Dhankhar.

“Did you get a lunch break today? No? This is why you’re taking Jairam ji’s name repeatedly. You cannot digest your food without taking his name,” Jaya Bachchan quipped to Dhankhar.

Dhankhar replied, “I’ll tell you on a light-hearted note. I did not take a lunch break today, but I had lunch with Jairam ji.” His response further evoked laughter in the House.

This humorous incident came days after a more serious exchange on July 29, when Jaya Bachchan raised a strong objection to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh referring to her as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” She asserted, “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed. This is something new, that women will be recognized by the name of their husbands, like they (women) have no existence or achievements of their own.”

In response, the Deputy Chairman, smiling, reminded her that her full name in the records was “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” This incident quickly drew reactions online, with many applauding her stance. One fan praised her courage, while another questioned why Amitabh’s name was included without her consent. “She’s not wrong in any sense,” commented another supporter, emphasizing that Jaya was a successful actress before marrying Amitabh Bachchan.

The episode also revived discussions about women’s identities in public and professional spheres. Navya Naveli Nanda, Jaya’s granddaughter, previously described Jaya as her inspiration, highlighting her grandmother’s strength and independence. In a 2021 interview with Her Circle, Navya said, “She is someone who has managed to create her own identity, leave her own mark. One of the biggest things I respect about her is how she uses her voice for things she is passionate about. She has always been very unapologetic, to the point, unfiltered, and she has a spine.”
