Lupita Nyong’o continues to hold onto the memory of her late Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman, mourning his loss four years into his demise. Nyong’o shared an emotional black-and-white photo of Boseman on Instagram alongside a quote about grief. The Kenyan-Mexican actress captioned, “Remembering Chadwick Boseman Forever.” Nyong’o, who played the actor’s onscreen love interest in the first movie, posted two photos of him — one alone and another with her.
“Grief never ends. But it changes. It is a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It’s the price of love,” she quoted from an anonymous source.
Nyong’o recalled how it was as though Boseman was still in her thoughts when promoting A Quiet Place: Day One. She portrayed a poet battling terminal cancer as an alien invasion threatens. It was a complicated transposition to make, Nyong’o told PEOPLE about being in the psychological and emotional state of playing someone who “is really facing their mortality, even before this apocalypse takes place, and whose life is slipping between her fingers.”
Boseman succumbed to colon cancer at the age of 43 in 2020, four years after being diagnosed with it. He also made a number of projects in the years leading up to his death, while battling numerous surgeries and complications from chemotherapy, according to a statement released by his family at that time.
Boseman had not shared his illness publicly before he died but his family confirmed on social media that the actor was first diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 and “battled with it [for] four years as it progressed to [stage 4].” His passing was peaceful and at home, where “he died peacefully with his wife by his side,” the message read.
Nyong’o rejoined the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, alongside many of the first film’s cast and director Ryan Coogler — some of whom paid respect to Boseman during press interviews and in the film itself.
Known for his many iconic roles, Boseman was perhaps best recognised as King T’Challa in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. He was also posthumously nominated for an Oscar in 2021 for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
