Mahesh Bhatt opened up about Pooja Bhatt’s drinking problem and said how his one text message that made her turn to sobriety. Over the years, Pooja has been vocal about her struggle with alcoholism. Even when she was a participant on Bigg Boss OTT, Pooja had spoken about her battle and journey to sobriety. In a new interview, Mahesh spoke about his drinking problem and fighting it when he mentioned Pooja’s drinking problem. He revealed that he sent her one text that changed her life choice.
Speaking with The Indian Express, Mahesh revealed that he was on a holiday with Soni Razdan, Alia Bhatt, and Shaheen Bhatt when Pooja was texting him. They were about to get into a fight when Mahesh urged her to stop drinking with a simple yet strong message.
“Once, Soni, Shaheen, Alia and I were going to the Maldives for a holiday. Pooja and I were exchanging messages, she was going through a phase of gloom and doom and kept saying how much she loves me. Our flight was about to take off, when I texted her: If you love me, then love yourself, because I live in you,” Bhatt said.
“That message did something to her. I knew she wasn’t loving herself enough. You abuse yourself through alcohol when there’s something you don’t like about yourself. My text just worked,” he added.
The director said that initially, he was not getting involved in the issue. “(People said,) ‘Pooja is drinking too much, you must tell her.’ But I would tell them she carries my genes, whatever we do, we do in excess. I told them I would never intervene and tell her what to do, what not to. I have broken every law in the book, so I have no business to sit on a high horse and take a holier than thou position,” Bhatt said.
Pooja is Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter from his first wife, Kiran Bhatt.
