Directed by Fazil, Manichitrathazhu stars Shobana, Suresh Gopi and Mohanlal in the lead roles. Hailed for its gripping story, stellar performances and memorable soundtrack, the film is considered one of the cornerstones of Malayalam cinema. Shobana’s portrayal of Ganga, a woman suffering from dissociative identity disorder, won her the National Film Award for Best Actress and cemented her status as one of the finest actresses in Indian cinema.
By remastering the film in 4K Dolby Atmosphere, the makers aim to bring the film’s intricate details and rich cinematography back to life for both old fans and a new generation of viewers. The film is scheduled to be re-released on August 17.
Suresh Gopi and Mohanlal, who played the roles of Nakulan and Dr Sunny Joseph respectively, also garnered critical acclaim for their performances. Mohanlal’s portrayal of the eccentric yet brilliant psychiatrist remains one of the most memorable roles in his illustrious career.
The re-release of Manichitrathazhu comes at a time when there is a growing trend of reviving classic films using modern technology to bring the magic of older films to today’s audiences.
Manichitrathazhu dealt with an unusual subject that was not common in Indian cinema at that time. The film ran for 300 days in many theatres. Manichitrathazhu was remade in four languages – in Kannada as Apthamitra, which in turn was remade in Tamil as Chandramukhi (with some plot changes), in Bengali as Rajmohol and in Hindi as Bhool Bhulaiyaa – and all were commercially successful. Geethaanjali, a spin-off directed by Priyadarshan and with Mohanlal in the role of Dr Sunny Joseph, was made in 2013.
