Late actor Chadwick Boseman has received a posthumous nomination for an Academy award in the Best Actor Category for George C Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The full list of nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards 2021 was disclosed by Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra on Monday, March 15. The Black Panther star’s Oscar nomination is a bittersweet moment for his family, colleagues and fans who lost the actor last year.
Chadwick also received the posthumous nomination and won a Golden Globe award in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama category. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on his behalf and choked back tears as she commemorated the late actor. “He would say something beautiful. Something inspiring. Something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us,” she said.

The actor has also received a BAFTA nomination in Leading Actor category, along with Riz Ahmed, Adarsh Gourav, Anthony Hopkins, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tahar Rahim.
Chadwick joins a small list of actors who received a posthumous nod for an Academy Award. James Dean, who passed away in 1955 was nominated for Academy Awards in the Best Actor category for East of Eden in 1955 and Giant in 1956. Heath Ledger was nominated and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight in 2008. Others include Massimo Troisi’s Best Actor win for Il Postino in 1995.
Chadwick Boseman passed away on August 28, 2020 after a four year-long battle with colon cancer. He kept his illness private and worked religiously without getting his health complications in the way of his professional life. He filmed many films, starting from Marshall, Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame to Da 5 Blood and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom while undergoing cancer treatment.
