There was a time in the Hindi film industry when actors were typecast as main leads, villains, comedians and so on. When you went to the theatre to watch a film starring Amrish Puri or Prem Chopra, you knew that you would see their awesome villainy on screen. But from the mid-2000s, a new trend emerged where actors who typically played the main lead also took on roles of the antagonist. However, some castings make a huge impression on audiences as you see an actor you least expected to play a certain range, ace the role. Something of this sort happened when Riteish Deshmukh was cast as the antagonist in the 2014 film Ek Villain.
Riteish Deshmukh has been known for his comic performances, and throughout his career, he has mostly played comic roles. With his boyish charm and innocent eyes, one never expected the actor to play a deranged serial killer in Ek Villain. The film, directed by Mohit Suri, also starred Siddharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor.
Riteish plays a mentally disturbed man with an irrational hatred towards women, leading him to stalk and kill them. It was surprising to see him perfectly fit into the challenging role and his performance was widely applauded. Made on a budget of Rs 39 crore, this film grossed Rs 100 crore at the box office across India and achieved a worldwide collection of Rs 170 crore.
Riteish Deshmukh, who hails from a strong political background, chose to pursue a career in Bollywood instead. His father, Vilasrao Deshmukh, was a former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and served as a cabinet minister multiple times. While Ritesh’s brothers followed a career in politics, he decided to carve out his path in the film industry. The actor made his Bollywood debut in 2003 with the film Tujhe Meri Kasam. Actress Genelia D’Souza was seen opposite him in this film. They also started seeing each other during the making of this film and are now married.
