Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty made a promising debut with the 1993 Baazigar which shot her to fame overnight. Although her character gets killed before the interval, it was this shock value that added weight to her character and got her noticed by the audience. She was just 17 when she landed the film Baazigar. The 48-year old actress, who is also known to be a fitness enthusiast, had appeared in a post for Humans Of Bombay 5 years back, where she talked about the obstacles she faced in the initial days of her career. Shilpa said that her introduction to the world of glamour was by fluke. She had participated in a fashion show just for fun, with the intention of stepping out of her comfort zone. The photos, however, came up very well and opened the doors of modelling assignments for her.
Soon, she was offered her first film but since she was not a native Hindi speaker, the language was a barrier for her. She also was petrified at the thought of facing the camera.
She described reaching a point in her career where she experienced a slowdown after appearing in multiple films. “Despite my efforts, I always felt like I was falling behind. It is not easy to go from being praised to suddenly being ignored,” she stated, mentioning occasions when she was unexpectedly dropped from film roles without explanation. “I can remember producers who removed me from their projects for no apparent reason. The odds seemed to be against me, but I continued to push forward,” Shilpa Shetty reflected.
Shilpa Shetty also talked about the emotional and mental stress that she had to go through during her stint at the British TV reality show Big Brother. She had faced a lot of racism in the house and had occasionally been reduced to tears.
“I faced public bullying and discrimination solely based on my nationality. It was a tough time – I felt completely isolated in that environment,” she revealed, adding: “However, I persevered. I couldn’t afford to give up, especially after coming this far. When I finally succeeded, people told me, ‘You’ve made us proud.’ That’s when I realised that all the challenges and perseverance were truly worthwhile.”
Talking about Shilpa Shetty’s personal life, she is married to businessman Raj Kundra. They have two children, Viaan and Shamisha. She owns luxurious properties including a sea-facing bungalow worth Rs 100 crore. She also has a private jet.
