When SS Rajamouli Remade This English Film And It Became A Blockbuster
The film was produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under Arka Media Works.

SS Rajamouli is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works primarily in Telugu cinema. He is known for his films in the epic, action and fantasy genres. He is the highest-grossing Indian director of all time and the highest-paid director in India. In 2010, Rajamouli directed a film titled Maryada Ramanna, starring Sunil. The film was produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under Arka Media Works. But do you know that this film was a remake of an English film?

It is based on the 1923 silent film Our Hospitality. When Rajamouli saw Buster Keaton’s silent comedy Our Hospitality, he liked it very much and wanted to retell the same story in his way. He tried to get in touch with the original makers of the film but found out that the original writers of the film were long dead and that the film’s copyright had expired as it had been over 75 years since the film’s release.

SS Kanchi and Rajamouli adapted the story with a Rayalaseema backdrop, focusing on the violence between the factions and the hospitality that prevailed in the region.

Initially, Trisha Krishnan was considered to play the female lead in the film. Sources say that Sunil is a comedy actor and Trisha turned down the chance to act in this film keeping her future in mind.

The film, released on 23 July 2010, received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film, made on a budget of Rs 12–14 crore, was commercially successful, grossing Rs 40 crore at the box office, with a distributor share of over Rs 28.5 crore. It became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of 2010. It received four Nandi Awards, including Best Popular Feature Film.

Maryada Ramanna has been remade in several languages. Nagineedu reprised his role from the original film in the Tamil and Malayalam versions. It is Rajamouli’s second film after Vikramarkudu that was remade the most.
