Amidst the alarming levels of pollution across the country, some youth have become hell bent on promoting better living and to give a message on reducing pollution.

In one such unique initiative, an 18-year-old MBBS student, Hazel, swam from Bandra Worli sealink to Gateway of India, on the night of December 29 to give a message on combating ocean pollution.

In the swimming spree, she covered a distance of 36 kms in 7 hours and 4 minutes.

Talking about her initiative, Hazel said, “Be it the sea of the country or the sea of Mumbai, lakhs of tonnes of garbage is thrown there every year, due to which everyone faces difficulties. It also causes a lot of damage to the environment.”

“I want people to clean the sea and not throw garbage in it,” she added.

Hazel further shared that she started her swim at around 2 AM, however, she had to be cautious because of the garbage in sea. During the entire session, she was accompanied by pilot boats, which included observers, time-keepers, her coach and family members.

“Fortunately, my parents were always very encouraging about my interest, and they have always supported me. Right from accompanying me for my training to accompanying me for various competitions, they have always encouraged me,” the 18-year-old swimmer said.

Earlier in 2021, she swam for 14-kilometers from Elephanta Caves to the Gateway of India in 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Following this, local MLA Mihir Kotecha issued an order mandating dustbins on all ferry boats to prevent passengers from littering the sea.

“Let us unite for a cause that extends beyond individual actions, safeguarding the seas not just for ourselves but for future generations,” Hazel said.
