SHINee’s Taemin Recalls His Time Before Solo Debut: 'I Was So Lacking'
Taemin recently appeared on BTS member Suga's celebrity chat show Suchwita to promote his latest album Guilty.

Taemin, the youngest member of boy band SHINee, released his fourth mini-album titled Guilty on Monday, October 30. The music project marks his solo comeback after more than two years and the K-pop idol appeared on BTS member Suga’s celebrity chat show Suchwita to promote his latest offering. For those unaware, Taemin became the first member of his K-pop group who bagged the opportunity to debut solo when he was merely 20. Travelling down memory lane, the musician recalled how the opportunity turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Danger hitmaker admitted he was already at his limits but persisted in working hard to achieve his dream.

The revelation came when Suga asked him about not getting many parts while promoting music with his group. “Could you tell us the process of going from that to becoming the first solo artist," he questioned. Taemin revealed after debuting at 16, he had a dream image of himself about turning 20. “I’m going to be the best. After these four years, I’m going to be the best," he constantly told himself. But even after putting in countless hours of practice, he didn’t come close to the image that he had in his mind. “I practised a lot and worked on improving myself. Then it was the end of the year right before turning 20. I saw myself now at 20 years old and I was so lacking," he said.

Taemin vividly remembers the first day of the new year, when everyone went home, he took a detour to his company. “I expected so much that I went to the practice room early in the morning and I cried and screamed," he continued.

“Then I kept practising. I practised really hard and just when I thought I was at my limits the company gave me a chance (solo debut). It felt like destiny," said a proud Taemin. The BTS rapper went on to pacify the Guilty singer highlighting he got the opportunity owing to all the hardships he sustained. When asked, “What type of artist did you expect yourself to be at 20?" Taemin said he believed at the time he’d have a dramatic change. “I thought I would be complete. And I thought there’d be a dramatic change. The image of me being 20 and becoming an adult was so amazing but I felt so small and lacking."

Now in his 30s, Taemin said he feels at ease with his journey. “I think I am getting there. Now, I’ve accepted myself for who I am because I would put myself in torment. So, I think I am getting there and there are sides of me that I didn’t expect I’d have. Things that have become my own unique identity," he added. Taemin explained the variety of shades as an artist he has amassed over the years, happened naturally and organically in a flow.

Taemin’s fourth mini album Guilty consists of 6 songs in total.
