Winter vacation for schools in Delhi has been reduced from 15 to six days. The winter break will now begin on January 1, 2024, and continue till January 6 instead of January 15, a circular from the Directorate of Education said on Wednesday. The school winter holidays, however, have been reduced as a portion of the break was observed from November 9 to 18 as schools were closed during that time due to severe air pollution in the national capital.

“However, in order to ensure that our students are not adversely affected due to the poor air quality in Delhi, a portion of winter Vacation was observed from November 9 to November 18,” the circular read.

“All the Heads of Schools of Delhi are hereby directed to disseminate this information among all the stakeholders including the teaching/non-teaching staff, students and parents,” the DoE said.

Meanwhile, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Chennai today due to the ongoing relief work and flooding because of cyclone Michaung. Chennai has been hit by severe floods due to heavy rainfall owing to the cyclonic storm. Chennai along with Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur districts have been flooded for the last few days even as the government machinery was deployed to clear the stagnant water and inundation.

Schools, colleges, and all educational institutes remained closed in the districts as well. Several parts of the city experienced no electricity or internet connectivity for 72 hours straight. While the intensity of the rain reduced on December 5, waterlogging was reported in some parts of the city, especially the suburban areas.

Cyclonic storm Michaung crossed Andhra Pradesh close to Baptla on Tuesday and weakened into a deep depression over central coastal AP, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. IMD has issued a red alert in eight areas of Andhra Pradesh, which include Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue in AP till today.
