A group of thieves in Delhi’s Moti Nagar cut open an ATM kiosk and fled with Rs 5 lakh. The burglars first spray-painted the CCTV camera and used a gas cutter to open the ATM kiosk, gaining access to the cash vault within.
Police arrived at the spot after receiving information that cash had been stolen after cutting the ATM at HDFC Bank in Sudarshan Park.
“On doing a spot inspection, the ATM of HDFC Bank was found to be open. The preparators sprayed the CCTV with black paint and then used a gas cutter to open the ATM and take out the cash. An FIR has been registered under IPC 457/380 at Moti Nagar Police Station,” police said in a statement.
The incident comes weeks after Delhi police apprehended five members of a gang believed to be responsible for a series of ATM robberies in the city.
Earlier this year in June, three Bangladeshi individuals were apprehended for their involvement in an ATM theft case in Pulwama district, south Kashmir. The stolen ATM was found buried in an orchard.
The incident took place on April 8, when unidentified perpetrators stole an ATM near Government Degree College in Pulwama. In response, the police registered a case (FIR No. 78/2023) under relevant sections of the law and launched an investigation.
“After analyzing digital and circumstantial evidence, as well as conducting focused examinations of suspects, a group of international thieves from Bangladesh, known for their involvement in similar crimes in the past, was identified and subsequently apprehended,” stated the police.
