Young India batting sensation Shubman Gill opens up on becoming the new captain of Gujarat Titans after Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction. The 2023 champions made a big call by picking young Shubman as their skipper over other experienced stars.
Shubman was the leader run-getter in the last year of IPL where he scored 890 runs which included three centuries as he played a pivotal role in Gujarat’s journey to the final where they lost to Chennai Super Kings.
Gill opened up on the amazing feeling of becoming the skipper of an IPL franchise which he called a dream of any kid who wants to become a cricketer.
“I think it’s gonna take, like, probably till the time we don’t play the first match. it’s not gonna, you know, quite sink in. It’s a great feeling. I mean, I was about seven or eight years old when you know IPL started happening. Obviously, it’s a dream for any kid who wants to be a cricketer and wants to play the IPL to be able to captain a team. Then to be able to be that kind of binding factor in this team, it feels amazing,” Shubman Gill said in a video posted by Gujarat Titans.

The batting sensation said that he has learnt a lot about captaincy by playing great leaders thus far in his career.
“I mean, we all know captainship comes, with a lot of things, and commitment is one of them. Discipline is one of them. Hard work is one of them. Loyalty is one of them. And because I think I’ve played under great leaders and I’ve learned a lot from them, I think those learnings that I have had from their experience playing under them is gonna help me a lot in this IPL,” he added.
The 24-year-old further talked about the senior stars in the side who are also part of the leadership group with the kind of experience they have.
We have great leaders in our team, be it Kane or be it Rashid or be it Shami or David, even Wriddhi bhai (Wriddhiman Saha), though I think it’s gonna be, great. And obviously, there are gonna be a lot of learnings along the way, which would be my experience as a captain. And I see a lot of people making great memories,” Gill added.
