Global technology leader Intel is collaborating with eight Indian companies from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana to accelerate laptop manufacturing in the country. These are prominent Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) in India. The list of companies involved in this collaboration comprises Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd.

It is believed that this strategic alliance leverages Intel’s extensive knowledge of the IT sector ecosystem to foster the development of a robust laptop manufacturing industry within India, aligning with the Make in India initiative, which aims to enhance technology-led growth.

While for some of these organisations, this endeavour marks their entry into the laptop manufacturing sector, the partnership between Intel and these Indian manufacturers is poised to bolster their ability to meet both domestic and global demand.

Intel stated that the collaboration will be instrumental in establishing the production of entry-level laptops in India. Intel has shared its expertise in deploying state-of-the-art Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly lines, creating a robust quality control process for components, and setting benchmarks for finished products. Intel has also extended its support to ODMs across both Semi Knocked Down (SKD) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly processes.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, praised this partnership. “This [the partnership] aligns with PM Narendra Modi’s vision to drive India’s Digital Economy to $1 Trillion and enable the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to contribute $300 billion by 2025-26. It is our Prime Minister’s determined goal that the Indian Electronics Ecosystem should have deep and broad capabilities and that Indian Electronics Manufacturing Companies should grow, scale, and expand their footprint as trusted players in the Electronics Global Value Chains,” he said.

Santhosh Viswanathan, Vice President and Managing Director, India Region, Intel, emphasised the significance of this collaboration for India’s electronics industry. “Bringing in Intel’s technology-related investments and global system supply chain ecosystem knowledge exemplifies our dedication to fostering electronic manufacturing capabilities in India. By enabling the laptop manufacturing process – from surface mount technology assembly to finished product – we are not only meeting the demands of the Make in India initiative but also contributing to the technological progress of the nation,” Viswanathan said.

The US company noted that with India’s electronics manufacturing sector at a crucial juncture, Intel is committed to facilitating access and opportunities for the country’s technology ecosystem, including Indian IT product manufacturers. The company will continue to collaborate with the government, industry, and the startup community to make a substantial and lasting impact on the nation’s technological progress.

The announcement by Intel came a few months after reports stated that the government has decided to ban some electronic product imports, including laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers and servers (IT devices). Later, officials clarified that there would be no bans on the import of such products; rather it was decided to bring a licensing system.
