Uttar Pradesh police chief Mukul Goel was on Wednesday removed from his post for allegedly neglecting his duties and not taking interest in departmental work. Goel, who assumed the charge as the UP Director-General of Police (DGP) in June 2021, will now be posted as DG, Civil Defence.
Although no official reason was given yet behind the transfer, sources told News18 that the decision was taken by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after Goel allegedly showed little interest in his departmental duties and for disobeying orders.
Last month, Goel was conspicuous by his absence in a key meeting chaired by the CM over the law and order situation in the state. Since then, rumours were rife that CM Adityanath was unhappy with Goel.
Sources told News18 that Goel was not attending team meetings and was also not present in important departmental presentations like that of the home department. But sources also said that Goel wasn’t called for any of these key meetings. However, the real issue, they said, is that he wasn’t on good terms with the CM and their personal equations weren’t all rosy.
ADG, law and order, Prashant Kumar will now fill in for Goel till a new DGP is appointed by the government. Sources suggest that senior IPS officer RK Vishwakarma of the 1988 batch might be the front runner in the race for the new DGP.
Goel, a resident of Muzaffarnagar, is an engineering graduate from IIT Delhi. He has been the SP of Azamgarh and the SSP of Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Saharanpur and Meerut. Goel has also been the DIG of Kanpur, Agra and Bareilly. Apart from this, Goel has also been IG in ITBP, and BSF. He has also been ADG Railway in UP, CBCID and ADG Law and Order of UP in Akhilesh Yadav’s government.
