Another spell of thunderstorm and heavy rain at night after the first long stretch of downpour that Delhi and NCR received early morning on Monday gave residents the much needed respite from the sweltering heat and made it the coolest May day in 18 years.
Delhiites woke up to thunderstorm and rain on Monday morning, and the national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 17.2 degrees Celsius, nine notches below the season’s average.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intense heatwave conditions are unlikely to hit the national capital at least for another six days. The morning weather conditions were caused due to a western disturbance affecting northwest India. There was moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied with strong gusty winds blowing at 80 kmph.
This, however, led to power cuts in parts of Delhi-NCR and affected road and air traffic. While the Delhi airport was crowded as several flights were delayed and some were cancelled due to bad weather, uprooted trees and waterlogging caused traffic snarls in some areas of Delhi-NCR.
In other news, the flood situation in Assam has deteriorated with six more persons, including two children, losing their lives and nearly 7.2 lakh people coming under the impact of the deluge across 22 districts. According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Monday, four persons drowned in Kampur revenue circle of Nagaon district.

Light rain likely in Delhi today
The minimum temperature in Delhi settled at 18.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, eight notches below normal, even as the weather office forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain later in the day.

IMD issues Orange alert for several UP districts
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for several districts of Uttar Pradesh for rains.
The IMD said on Tuesday that UP, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi would continue to receive rain. An Orange alert has also been issued for Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand, IMD said, adding that the two states are very likely to receive widespread to moderate rainfall accompanied with gusty winds.
Rains claim five lives in Uttar Pradesh
Heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorm, claimed five lives — two in Gonda and three in Lakhimpur Kheri — in the state on Monday. Two persons lost their lives, while two others were injured on Monday afternoon in a dust storm followed by rain in Gonda, officials said.
Satyaprakash (23), a resident of Chhapia police station area, died as a tree fell on him due to heavy winds, when he was going to appear in an examination, the officials said. Ram Moorat (43), a resident of Dhaneypur police station area, also died, when a tree fell on him.
Gonda District Magistrate Ujjwal Kumar said that two persons died in rain-related incidents, and a report has been sought from the respective sub-divisional magistrates. Meanwhile, in Lakhimpur Kheri, two cousins were killed when the lightning struck them at Chandila village, police officials said. Tariq (15) and his cousin Rakiba (9) had gone to an orchard to pick mangoes amid heavy rainfall and strong winds on Monday morning when the lightning struck them, said Pasgawan police station SHO Arun Kumar Singh.
In a separate incident at Akbarpur village, Shatrohan (55) was stuck under a huge tree uprooted by strong winds. Villagers somehow pulled Shatrohan out from under the tree and rushed him to a nearby health centre but he succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. Following loss of lives due to rain-related incidents, CM Yogi Adityanath has directed the district magistrates of the districts affected by the incidents of storm, rain and lightning to immediately distribute relief to the kin of the victims, the government said in a statement issued in Lucknow. In view of the natural calamity, relief work should be done effectively in the districts, he instructed.
Delhi sees coldest May day in 18 years
Thanks to early morning rain and another spell of downpour at night on Monday, Delhi recorded its coldest May day in 18 years and lowest temperature in 72 days. While the long spell of rain on Monday was a much-needed relief for the residents of Delhi-NCR, it also hit air traffic, caused traffic snarls and power cuts in several areas.

The rain and thundershower also affected road and air traffic during the rush hours, and brought down houses and trees at some places, leaving at least eight people injured. Power disruption was reported in several parts.

One person at Doboka in Hojai district and a child at Silchar in Cachar, too, died due to the flood, it said on Sunday. The death toll due to the flood and landslides this year has now gone up to 24 across Assam.
Kedarnath yatra suspended amid heavy rains
Meanwhile, the Kedarnath yatra was suspended amid heavy rains on Monday with devotees en route to the shrine halted at various places between Gaurikund and Kedarnath, an official said. Conscious of the 2013 Kedarnath deluge tragedy, the Rudraprayag district administration appealed to pilgrims to stay put at their respective stations till the weather improves, he said.

The Rudraprayag district magistrate said the people who had already worshipped at the Lord Shiva’s temple in Kedarnath by Monday morning were stopped from undertaking their return journey. Similarly, the people readying themselves to proceed to Kedarnath from its base camp Gaurikund were stopped from undertaking the onward journey to the shrine, he said.
