Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday congratulated Om Birla on being elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for the second term and hoped that actions like suspension and expulsion of MPs don’t take place in the 18th Lok Sabha.
In his two-minute address filled with sarcasm and a strong message for the newly elected Speaker, the Samajwadi Party leader said he hoped that Birla would be impartial towards the Opposition and give its leaders an equal opportunity to speak in the house.
Stating that impartiality is a great responsibility, Yadav said, “We believe you will move forward without discrimination and as the Speaker, you will give equal opportunity and respect to every party. You sitting here are the chief justice of the court of democracy,” Yadav said in the Lower House of Parliament.
“The House should function on your signals and not the other way round. We stand with all your just decisions. We expect that the voice of no public representative will be suppressed and actions like suspensions which hurt the dignity of the House will not be taken,” he added.
The Samajwadi Party president’s remarks came in view of the suspension of MPs in the last winter session of the Parliament.
Om Birla Elected Speaker For Second Term
NDA nominee Om Birla on Wednesday defeated Congress leader and eight-time MP K Suresh, the opposition INDIA bloc’s contender, in the rare election for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. This was the first such poll since 1976. Birla will serve as the Speaker of the House for the second straight term.
The eight-day session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced on Monday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all the other MPs taking oath as members of the Lower House of Parliament.
