Chennai: Days after actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth chose to join hands with the People's Welfare Front (PWF), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been left to hunt for allies for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had cobbled up a rainbow coalition with the MDMK and PMK. But this time around, while the DMDK and PWF have joined hands, PMK has decided to go solo.
The PMK is keen on having Anbumani Ramadoss as its chief ministerial candidate.
BJP National Executive Member L Ganesan said DMDK and PWF joining hands had brought about a 'clarity' to the state's political situation.
In the other camp, Congress's Ghulam Nabi Azad will be in Chennai on Friday for seat shearing talks with the DMK. He will be meeting DMK chief Karunanadhi at his residence.
Tamil Nadu will now see a multi-cornered fight. Those battling it out on May 16 will be the ruling AIADMK, the DMK-Congress alliance, People's Welfare Front led by Vijayakanth, Anbumani Ramadoss's PMK and the BJP.
For nearly 50 years Tamil Nadu has seen the Dravidian parties in power. Vijayakanth formed the DMDK in 2005 as an alternative to the DMK and the AIADMK. And although the actor-turned-politician aligned with the AIADMK in 2011 and then joined the NDA in 2014, the Captain now believes the time is right to be king and not kingmaker.
