Kanpur: The Centre on Saturday said it is closely watching developments in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of the disqualification of 13 MLAs of BSP breakaway faction by the Supreme Court (SC).
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal said the Government is keeping a close watch on the developments in the state.
His remarks assume significance following reports that the UP Governor T V Rajeswar has sent a report to the Centre apprehending that horse-trading may take place if a floor test is conducted to prove the majority of Mulayam Singh government.
Jaiswal held BJP responsible for the formation of the Mulayam government as it was the saffron party leader Kesari Nath Tripathi who, as Speaker of the Assembly, had recognised the breakaway faction of the BSP.
After the disqualification of 13 MLAs by Supreme Court it was the moral duty of state government to step down, Jaiswal said.
“The Samajwadi Party-led government in the state was formed illegally and it has no right to remain in power,” he added.
The Union Minister added that Uttar Pradesh developments would not affect the Centre and the UPA government would complete its tenure.
