New Delhi/Lucknow: The controversial 'split Uttar Pradesh' resolution brought by Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday stirred a hornet's nest with the Congress, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party accusing her of political opportunism.
Close on the heels of the passage of the resolution in Uttar Pradesh Assembly to divide the state into four parts, Mayawati's opponents dubbed the move as "murder of democracy," "a political stunt" and a "diversionary tactic".
"If some persons think that the people of UP are foolish and that they cannot see through this proposal inspired by political opportunism, they will get an appropriate reply (in the elections)," Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said.
Senior Congress leader Mohan Prakash saw the passage of the resolution without a discussion as "murder of democracy" and attacked Samajwadi Party and BJP as well over the issue.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi saw the whole exercise as "a cover up of the sins of the misrule of BSP in UP for the past four-and-a-half years."
Mayawati's arch detractor and SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav even went to the extent of demanding that Centre quash Monday's proceedings of the UP Assembly in which the resolution was passed.
"It is a diversionary tactic aimed at drawing away people's attention from corruption in her rule and our party at no cost will allow the division of the state," he said.
The support for the Chief Minister, however came from the Lok Manch President Amar Singh, who was till some time back close associate of Mulayam Singh Yadav. Amar Singh recalled that socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia, had also supported the idea of division of bigger states.
