Ex-cricketer makes political debut in UP town.

New Delhi: Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin was Friday given the Congress ticket for the Moradabad Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Minister of State for External Affairs and also Information and Broadcasting Anand Sharma told reporters that Azharuddin would be contesting from Moradabad.

Azharuddin formally joined the Congress Feb 19.

The Congress Friday released the third list of 14 candidates for Uttar Pradesh. The party has already declared 39 candidates for the state.

Earlier, there was speculation that Azharuddin would get the ticket for the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat but the party leadership reportedly decided to re-nominate the sitting MP Anjan Kumar Yadav.

Azharuddin, who was banned for life from cricket for his alleged role in a match fixing scam, had said that he plans to campaign for the Congress party across the country.

Last week, the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Rita Bahuguna Joshi had said that the former cricketer has "desired to contest from the state".
