Congress MP Rajiv Satav, 46, Passes Away After Covid-Related Complications, Party Mourns 'Big Loss'
Satav, 46, a member of the AICC and considered a bulwark of his party in the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions, had tested positive on April 22.

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Satav, who tested positive for Covid-19 in April, passed away on Sunday after being on ventilator support at a private hospital in Pune. Satav was diagnosed with a new viral infection and was in critical condition.

Satav, 46, a member of the AICC and considered a bulwark of his party in the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions, had tested positive on April 22. He was later admitted to the city’s Jehangir Hospital and put on ventilator support since his condition worsened, said doctors.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi condoled the demise and described Satav as a rising star of the party known for his unfailing dedication and sincerity. In her condolence message, Gandhi said she is deeply pained by the tragic loss of the party leader, “who was a trusted colleague and a friend to all of us”.

She said it is also a personal loss to her. “Rajeev Satav was only 46 years old yet he rose from the grassroots to holding many responsibilities in a short time due to his unfailing dedication, sincerity and hard work,” she said. Gandhi said Satav served as President of the Indian Youth Congress, AICC secretary and In-charge of the state of Gujarat. “As Member of the Lok Sabha, he championed people’s issues and fought for the ideals of the constitution. “He was a rising star of the Congress party,” Gandhi said and added that the entire Congress mourns his loss.

Expressing his anguish, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala took to Twitter to say he was stunned by the loss.

Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal tweeted, “Congress has lost its frontline warrior, CWC Member, M.P, most promising young leader and a dear friend, Sh. Rajiv Satav today. I am devastated by the irreparable loss. Party will forever miss his indelible dedication, connect & immense popularity. My heartfelt condolences !”

Satav had won the Hingoli Lok Sabha constituency in the 2014 general election by defeating then Shiv Sena leader Subhash Wankhede in a hotly contested battle.
