Forces to stay for 10 days after WB poll ends: EC
The EC on Thursday said that paramilitary forces will remain for 10 more days after the conclusion of the WB polls.

Kolkata: The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday said that paramilitary forces will remain for 10 more days after the conclusion of the West Bengal assembly polls.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) S Y Quraishi said: "We have made sure that the central paramilitary forces continue to be in position for 10 more days even after the conclusion of poll process. This is a special measure."

The poll panel order follows complaints in some areas that voters were apprehensive of their security once the poll process was over.

In his election campaign meetings on Monday, union Home Minister P Chidambaram had urged people to vote fearlessly, promising that he will ensure the paramilitary forces deployed stayed back for a few more days to instil a sense of security.

The CEC also informed that Rs 6.21 crore and Rs 1.11 crore of illegal money had been seized by the Income Tax department and the poll panel's flying squad respectively.

"Without evidence we cannot say it is black money," he added.

Re-polling has been ordered in a booth each in Beliaghata constituency of Kolkata and Ashok Nagar seat in North 24 Parganas, the CEC said.

"The ballot unit of the electronic voting machine (EVM) was improperly placed at the booth in Ashok Nagar, while there was a discrepancy between the number of registered votes and those recorded in the EVM at Beliaghata," said EC sources.
