New Delhi: The days are being numbered for the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government after the disqualifcation of 13 BSP legislators by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Amid speculation over the possible dismissal of the government, Uttar Pradesh Governor TV Rajeswar was reported to be seeking legal opinion on the matter.
The Opposition parties in the state, including the Congress, have raised questions on the constitutionality of the government and demanded its immediate dismissal from the Governor.
PTI quoted “well-placed sources in Lucknow” to suggest that the Governor could also seek an explanation from the Chief Minister to know his contention.
Sources said the Governor was trying to ascertain the status of 24 other breakaway BSP legislators, who had defected after the 13 left the party. One view doing the rounds in the political and legal circles is that since the Apex Court had disqualified the 13 MLAs from August 28, 2003, the day they met the Governor and pledged their support to the Samajwadi Party, those crossing the floor later automatically stand disqualified.
While the BJP had submitted a memorandum soon after the Apex Court verdict, the Congress leaders met the Governor on Thursday and submitted a memorandum demanding the dismissal of the Mulayam government.
BSP and RLD would also be meeting the Governor later to make a similar demand.
Though the government does not face any threat due to the disqualification of the 13 MLAs, it was in a bind on the continuance of several of them as ministers in the government.
