Home Ministry seeks report from UP government on lynching of a man for allegedly consuming beef

New Delhi: Three days after a mob killed a man and injured his son over rumours that they ate beef, the Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government.

The ministry has also asked the state government to ensure that there is no repeat of such incidents in the future.

On Monday, a mob broke into the man's house and attacked him, his son and even the women in the house. Akhlaq was beaten to death by the mob while his son was left severely injured.

Six people were arrested in connection with the attack, around 45 km from Delhi, sparking protests that led to police firing and damage to vehicles. On Wednesday, an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh was on Wednesday announced by the UP government to the kin of the deceased man.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had also instructed the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Noida to provide full protection to the family of the victim.

The victim used to live his mother, wife, younger son and daughter. His elder son works with the Indian Air Force and is currently posted in Chennai.
