Bhopal: A jawan of the special unit Hawk Force was on Wednesday killed and his colleague injured in a Naxal ambush in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district, police said.
The incident took place near Sitapala, which is close to Chhattisgarh border.
Six jawans of Madhya Police's Hawk Force, along with their Platoon Commander, were heading to Sitapala on motorbikes when they were ambushed by armed Naxals, said Balaghat Inspector General of Police C B Muniraju.
The extremists opened fire at the jawans, killing Harish Rahgdale (27) and injuring his colleague identified only as Kamlesh, he said.
The Hawk Force team retaliated and an exchange of fire ensued during which more than 80 rounds were fired from both sides, Muniraju said. However, there was no report of any casualty on the Naxals' side.
The surviving jawans later entered a village in a nearby jungle in search of the extremists. A scuffle broke out between them and the locals, who torched a police vehicle that had reached the spot after the incident, sources said.
Muniraju denied the policemen were roughed up, but admitted that the villagers had torched a police vehicle.
Balaghat, Mandla and Dindori are Madhya Pradesh's Naxalism-affected districts.
