Karat defends CPM decision to support Pranab
The CPI(M) wanted to take advantage of the rift within the UPA as Trinamool was against Pranab's candidature.

New Delhi: CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat on Sunday sought to defend the party's support to Pranab Mukherjee in the Presidential election, indicating that its decision to take advantage of the rift in the UPA was right.

He also said not a single committee in the party has opposed the decision to support the UPA candidate in the Presidential poll.

The CPI(M) had decided to support Mukherjee saying it should take advantage of the rift within the ruling alliance as Trinamool was against his candidature.

"Has the President election changed the state of relations between Congress and Trinamool," he told reporters when asked whether the decision to support Mukherjee has backfired as Trinamool also decided to back him.

Trinamool, which had initially mooted the name of former President APJ Abdul Kalam for the President's post, has decided to support Mukherjee with a "heavy heart". Last week, the party also said it will go it alone in West Bengal though it will remain in the UPA at the Centre.

When asked about opposition to the decision from SFI in Jawaharlal Nehru University, he said none of the CPI(M) committees in the states or districts has opposed the decision.

"There may be individuals who are opposed to it. But no committees have taken a stand against the decision," he said.
