Police suspect political rivalry behind the attack.

Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking incident in Kerala's Malappuram, two CPM workers were hacked in broad daylight by suspected Popular Front workers.

The incident happened on Wednesday around 11 am when the two victims were travelling and their car was waylaid by the accused. The victims were reportedly hacked in full public view and were later admitted to a nearby hospital with severe injuries.

The incident is said to be a result of a tiff between workers of the two parties during a victory rally that the CPM had taken out when it won three seats in the by-elections to the Mangalam Panchayath in Tirur. The CPM had ousted Muslim League from the seats.

The CPM has now accused the League of providing political protection to the Popular Front workers and alleged police inaction. The police and the League, however, have denied the charges.

"We received the complaint on Wednesday and from then on, the police is on the lookout for the culprits. There is no inaction," Shankar Reddy, ADGP North Zone, said.
