New Delhi: Even as protests have increased over India's participation in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is all set to leave for Colombo on Wednesday to attend the meet. Prime Minister Manmohan had decided to skip the meet earlier amidst protests.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution demanding India to completely boycott CHOGM summit in Colombo. Slamming the Centre's decision to participate in the Commonwealth Summit "ignoring" the sentiments of Tamils, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa moved a resolution in a special session of the state assembly demanding India's "complete boycott" of the meet.
Meanwhilw, a delegation of fishermen representatives from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday met Khurshid ahead of his visit to Colombo for participating in the CHOGM meet between November 15 and 17.
The delegation had requested Khurshid to hold discussions with the Sri Lankan leadership for the release of Indian fishermen jailed in the island nation. The delegation met Khurshid ahead of his visit to Colombo for participating in the CHOGM meet between November 15 and 17.
According to M Ilango, convener of the delegation, 81 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are in various Sri Lankan jails. "We had requested our External Affairs Minister to hold talks with his counterpart in Sri Lanka and President Mahinda Rajapaksa over the issue," he said.
Khurshid, he said, gave a patient listening to them and assured to look into their demands.
