Most political killings under Left rule: Pranab
Pranab Mukherjee alleged that highest number of political killings occurred in the state under the Left Front govt.

Katwa: Criticising law and order situation in West Bengal, senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday alleged that highest number of political killings occurred in the state under the Left Front government.

"Terror prevails and there have been the highest number of political killings and torture on women. Criminalisation has set into state politics during the 34 years of the Left Front regime," Mukherjee, the Union Finance Minister told an election meeting at Katwa in Burdwan district in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Referring to the Congress and Trinamool Congress alliance for the Assembly polls in the state, Mukherjee said, "The alliance was made honouring the wishes of Sonia Gandhi (Congress president). He said that neither the Trinamool Congress nor the Congress could dislodge the Left Front alone and so the two parties had forged an alliance.

"We forged the alliance to remove the Left Front after 34 years of power," he said.

He said since 1977 the efforts to remove the Left Front did not succeed. "But the results of the Lok Sabha election which saw the Trinamool Congress and Congress alliance bagging 26 out of 42 seats proved that the Left Front could be defeated if both parties join hands," he said.

He said that winds of change were sweeping the state from Darjeeling and would turn into a cyclone when it crossed the Bay of Bengal ending Left Front rule. Alleging that the Left Front had ruined the state, he criticised the government for failing to properly utilize MNREGA funds.

He said there was total disbursement of Rs 40,000 crore under the scheme for 27 states, but while other states had spent the money, West Bengal could not do so. The state government was responsible for the state slipping in all fields -- education, health, industry and utilisation of central funds for various schemes for the people.

"There is no industry and no health care," he said.
