A letter threatening to kill Karunanidhi was received on Thursday.

Coimbatore: A postcard threatening to kill Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was received by the Tirupur taluk authorities on Thursday.

The letter, purportedly written by 'Al-Umma' threatens to target the Chief Minister on August 15 while hoisting the Tricolour as part of Independence Day celebrations in Chennai.

Al-Umma is a proscribed organisation in India.

Accusing the Chief Minister of refusing to increase the age limit for police recruitment from 24 to 29, the card said "there was a plot to kill Karunanidhi while hoisting the tricolour."

"The DMK flag would fly half-mast within one week. There would be an explosion during the police recruitment on 29 (without mentioning the month). This is Allah's order — Al-Umma organisation," the letter further states.

The card, bearing the date and seal of Coimbatore Head Office of the outfit was received at Tirupur post office on Wednesday, which was delivered around noon, police sources said.

Meanwhile, former MLA and Sulur panchayat chairman SS Ponmudi also received an identical letter, which bore the seal of Annuparpalayam in the district, sources said. Tirupur police has initiated investigation to find out the origin of the letter.

Tirupur Municipality chairman had received a letter some six months ago, threatening to eliminate Karunanidhi.
