Jangipur (West Bengal): External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is busy campaigning these days. Sixty-odd kilometer border that Jangipur shares with Bangaldesh was among the first places that the leader visited for election campaign.
Mukherjee's flair in representing the government in national and international forum was equally visible in his efforts to reach out to his people in the dusty grassroots of Murshidabad.
“Of course, there is no contradiction. After all the political executive have to deal with their electorate, their constituency. They are also political animals and as political animals they have their primary responsibility towards their party,” says Mukherjee, who is contesting the elections from Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency.
His morning started campaigning from his Jangipur residence in an uncovered vehicle. This showed that Mukherjee doesn’t care about the perceptive security threat he had.
Flowers and the auspicious sound of conch shells greeted the leader at every step. Mukherjee obliged the thousands who ignored heat and dust to catch a glimpse of the one of the country's top political executives.
“He has done good work and he did a lot for this constituency. He has developed this place in a big way,” says a Jangipur resident, Aruna Asab Laila.
“He is a hard worker and we knew that from the beginning,” adds another Jangipur resident, Md Manab Ali.
Even after seeing an impressive gathering at a non-descript corner of Jangipur, Mukherjee was complacent because he is aware that more than road shows a lot need to be done to convert the people’s enthusiasm into votes.
