New Delhi: The proposal to nominate master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, actress Rekha and two others to the Rajya Sabha has been forwarded to the President's office. If President Pratibha Patil gives her consent, Sachin and Rekha will join the ranks of several other distinguished persons from fields other than politics who have held or continue to hold the positions of nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.
In the past, eminent personalities like directors Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen and playback singer Lata Mangeshkar had been the nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.
Sachin will join the ranks of hockey star Dilip Tirkey and wrestler Dara Singh, while Rekha will extend a tradition which has seen actors and actresses like Prithviraj Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Vaijayanthimala, Nargis, Dharmendra and Hema Malini among others to have been offered this position. Directors like Shyam Benegal and Mrinal Sen have also held the same office whereas poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar continues to hold the position in the current Rajya Sabha.
Noted economist Bhalchandra Mungekar, educationist Ram Dayal Munda, theatre personalities like Habib Tanvir and B Jayshree, painter MF Husein, writer Khushwant Singh, cartoonist RK Narayan, sitarist Pt Ravishankar and ornithologist Salim Ali are some of the other prominent people who have held the position of a Rajya Sabha member.
